Gregorius Statue
Gregorius was born in Rome in 540. His mother Silvia and two aunts, Tarsilla and Aemeliana, are also respected by the Church as saints. His father Geordian, was quite rich; owns a lot of land in Sicilia, and a beautiful house in the valley of the Ceolian hills, Rome. During his childhood, Gregory experienced the atmosphere of the Goth, German occupation of Rome; experienced a reduction in the population of Rome and the chaos of city life. Nonetheless, Gregory received an adequate education. He is very good at the lessons of grammar, rhetoric and dialetics.
Because of his prominent position among aristocratic (aristocratic) families, Gregory easily became involved in public public life, and presided over a small number of offices. At the age of 33 he became prefect of the city of Rome, a high and respected position in Roman politics at that time. But God wanted Gregory to work in His vineyard. Gregory resigned his political office and announced his intention to lead a religious life. He sold most of his wealth and used the money he earned to start monasteries. There were six monasteries founded on Sicilia and one in Rome. In the monasteries, he lived his life as a monk. But he not only lived in the monastery to pray and meditate, he was also active outside; help the poor and oppressed, become a deacon in Rome, become Ambassador at the court of Constantinople. In 586 he was elected Abbot of the monastery of St. Andrew in Rome. There he struggled to free the slaves who were sold in the markets of the city of Rome.
In 590, he was made Pope. In this way he could carry out with dignity his aspirations of liberating the poor and weak, especially the slaves from England. He sent Saint Augustine to England with 40 other monks to preach the gospel there. Gregory is the first Pope to formally declare himself Head of the worldwide Catholic Church. He led the Church for 14 years, and is known as the great Pope, statesman and administrator of the early Middle Ages and the last Father of the Latin Church. Because of his weighty writings, he was dubbed the Poet of the Latin Church. Even so, he remained humble and called himself 'Servant of Allah's Servants' (servus servorum Dei). This title remains in use today for the office of the Pope in Rome. After presiding over Christ's Church for 14 years, Gregory died in 604. His party was also celebrated on 12 March.
